Pantoja turned professional in July 2007 and won his debut fight against Antonio Carlos via submission (armbar) in the first round, for a local Brazilian promotion.[1] Pantoja followed this up over a year later, with a victory over Peterson Malfort via TKO (punches) in the second round.[2]
Pantoja's first professional loss then came at the hands of William Vianna via a split decision in a bantamweight[3] bout.[4]
Pantoja then signed for Shooto Brazil in 2009 and made his promotional debut against Gabriel Wolff. At the end of the second round, Pantoja was declared the winner after a doctor stoppage.[5]
Two months later, Pantoja defeated Bruno Moreno via TKO (doctor stoppage) once again; this time in the third round.[5]
Pantoja's final appearance in his first Shooto stint was a victory over Michael Willian Costa via unanimous decision. After this, Pantoja temporarily left Shooto and joined the "Watch Out Combat Show" promotion.[5]
Pantoja won his two fights in the promotion; one by KO (punches) and another via split decision.[5]
Pantoja was then declared the 7th pick in Sherdog's list of "10 Brazilians to watch in 2010" with Sherdog claiming that Pantoja was "a versatile fighter who impressed with strong muay Thai and an excellent ground game"[6]
Pantoja rejoined Shooto and signed to face Jussier da Silva for the Shooto Bantamweight South American title. Sherdog described the two fighters as "Brazil's two top flyweights." The bout was also notable as Pantoja's opponent had defeated the Shooto World Champion at that weight in a non-title bout just months prior and was deemed to be the #1 flyweight in the world, while Pantoja was undefeated at flyweight (123 lb).[3]
Just prior to the bout, Pantoja was ranked just outside the top 10 flyweights in the Sherdog rankings.[7] Unfortunately for Pantoja, he was on the wrong end of a unanimous decision, handing him his debut loss at flyweight.[8]
Returning to Shooto Brazil in September 2010, Pantoja faced Bruno Azevedo. Pantoja secured a rear naked choke victory in the first round.[9]
